Three teams headed by Engineering students and an alumna are among the 10 Olin Cup Competition finalists for the 2014-2015 competition.

The 10 teams, chosen from 21 semifinalist teams, are offering new and creative solutions to real-world challenges and will compete for $70,000 in seed money to start a new company. The Olin Cup is sponsored by the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Washington University in St. Louis.

The teams involving Engineering are:

Applied Particle Technology, led by Jiaxi Fang, a doctoral student in Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering. The team is working to provide innovative air treatment and filtration solutions for specialty applications that require high efficiency removal of ultra-fine particles, inactivation of pathogens and/or removal of toxic fumes and odors.

DataDog Health, led by Elizabeth Russell, who earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering in 2014, is working on a way to manage and reduce anxiety. By leveraging wearable devices and evidence-based therapies, the DataDog app and Web portal provide anxiety-coping tools with real-time feedback. Russell was a member of the Viamor Research Solutions team that tied for first place in the 2014 Discovery Competition, sponsored by the School of Engineering & Applied Science.

EnteroGauge is led by Alan Zhao, a junior majoring in biomedical engineering with minors in mechanical engineering and managerial economics in the Olin Business School. The team is a medical device startup poised to revolutionize how single balloon enteroscopy is performed, radically altering the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies in the small intestine.

The finalists will compete again in January 2015, with each submitting a business plan and oral presentation to the judges in the final phase of the competition.
