Undergraduate students majoring in engineering, math and the physical and life sciences have a new summer research opportunity at Washington University in St. Louis’ School of Engineering & Applied Science.
Under the new Summer Engineering Fellowship Program, exceptional rising sophomores, juniors and seniors may apply for a nine-week independent research project under the guidance of a faculty member in the school. Projects will be in the areas of mechanical, electrical, biomedical and chemical engineering, as well as computer science and materials science. Potential applications include medicine, renewable energy, pollution control and nanotechnology.
Fellows will be selected for their intellectual promise, curiosity and motivation. While previous research experience is not required, students must have strong quantitative skills, an interest in research and plan to continue as an undergraduate in Fall 2015.
In addition to providing hands-on research experience with a faculty mentor, fellows will be provided with housing for the 10-week period, transportation to and from St. Louis and a $4,000 stipend. They will also participate in networking activities with other undergraduate researchers and well as preparation for graduate school admissions exams.
Fellows will work full-time from May 26-July 31 and attend program events, seminars and workshops. At the end of the program, each will write a report about his or her research and present it to the other fellows and faculty mentors.
Students from underrepresented backgrounds (African-American, Latino, Native American, those from underprivileged backgrounds and women) are encouraged to apply.
Applications, due March 1, must include a personal statement, a resume, unofficial transcript and two references (at least one must be from a faculty member at student’s current institution). Complete application requirements are here.
